hello, everyone, and good morning. welcome to cnn this morning. i m amara walker. i m victor blackwell. it s happened again. we are waking up to the tragic realities of gun violence in this country. eight people are dead, seven injured over a mass shooting at an outlet mall in allen, texas. some of the scenes we saw captured on video, we warn you they are hard to watch. . you can hear the rapid fire there and see shoppers and employees scrambling into storage areas, they hid when they heard the gunshots. witnesses say some people sheltered in place for up to two hours as law enforcement cleared the sprawling area. my mom and i were in johnson and murphy s shopping and heard about ten pops go off. i look at the customer next to me. i was like, was that gunshots? and he was like, no, it s probably just construction or something and heard 10, 15 more shots go off. so i ran to the front of the store. we are like, no, that s shooting. we see the guy. he is dressed in all blac
an allen police officer at the mall for anon related call. investigators believe that the shooter was acting alone. juliette kai em is back us with. if you are keeping tally, there been 200 mass shootings this year. we are not even 200 days into the year. i think like 120 some days in the year. i was doing the math. we were talking about this before the break. i mean, how do we learn to live with this? because this is america for you. yes. obviously, there is the defensive measures making self-targets soft targets less response, frtraining for response, training people not just about run, hide fight, and this is horrible, but stop the bleed, tourniquets, victims of gun violence. those are defects, those are sort of accepting something bad is going to happen because to a certain extent we are stuck on
surveilled they didn t pick it out of a phone book. they picked it because there were suspicious characters going in and out and now the public officials are stopping that, that s a mistake, i think, don t you? it s a mistake this they were allowed to do that. but the federal government and the fbi even preempt state officials so i anticipate that the fbi is doing a deep scrub this have guy s background, david. david: all right, well, the brooklyn bridge. this came as a shock to me, i m overjoyed that he wasn t able to do that, even though it was horrible what he did do. is that because the brooklyn bridge was a harder target? well, it was. the brooklyn bridge and those kind of targets are considered harder targets. self-targets are unfortunately, like that bike path, there are other soft target, i m hoping and i know there will be a lot of security tomorrow, that you ll have thousands and thousands of people at the
right now? it will obviously be self-targets. this is clearly where isis is focusing. it will be any major event, any institution that has symbolic meaning. quickly, we never talk about perfect security. anyone in homeland security or emergency management, all we can do is minimize the risk and fortify the vulnerabilities. in a society like ours, you re never going to get fortress america. we re too big, too vast. you try to lower the risk and for theny things like soft targets. the challenge in the united states, even if you fortify the soft targets, there will be other soft targets you didn t fortify. it s a question of resources, too. how do you manage all of those soft targets in a place the size of america. let s talk about the fbi. we understand they re stepping up surveillance of known isis sympathizers.
recruited to go to somalia, one-way ticket. often they die there. a subject of law enforcement attention. there are a lot of soft targets. we do see attacks on self-targets. if you do the thought experiment where a lot of them conducting by people shouting ala akbar or hard to judge motivation we d be having a different kind of conversation in fact, attacks by people motivated by al qaeda s ideology in the united states on soft targets are pretty infreque infrequent. we saw in the boston marathon bombing two people who did this. they weren t located by nsa surveillance. nsa surveillance i think the role it plays in averting terrorist attacks has been much exaggerated by the government if you really look at the record. which isn t to say that it isn t sometimes useful. but americans need to have a conversation about the bounds between security and liberty. if we were facing an existential threat from these folks, maybe
