Selectmen talk Town Meetings — Spring, Special

This story has been updated to reflect that “Sewer Superintendent” is the accurate title for that position.  The overarching theme when the Board of Selectmen met on Tuesday, March 9, was Town Meeting business.  With a Special Town Meeting scheduled for April 10 and the annual Spring Town Meeting scheduled for April 26, the Selectmen had plenty to consider and that was even before the board voted to call another Special Town Meeting within the Special Town Meeting on April 10.  As of March 9, interested voters should plan to attend Town Meetings on: •  April 10 for a Special Town Meeting (and another Special Town Meeting within it) to vote on the proposed Hospitality District and a possible lease of Westfield, where the Wareham Tigers hope to establish fields.

Host community agreements approved, process evaluated

Madison Czopek Feb 23, 2021 The Board of Selectmen discussed adjustments to the town’s procedure for negotiating host community agreements with marijuana businesses that plan to operate in Wareham, before approving two such agreements during their Feb. 23 meeting. Following concerns from some members of the board that the town does not collect enough information from business owners who plan to operate cannabis-based businesses in Wareham, a new procedure was discussed. Ken Buckland, director of planning and community development, explained that currently, people who wish to start “an adult-use marijuana establishment” in Wareham must submit a letter of intent to his office, along with documentation of the owners, the address of the proposed business, a copy of the business plan and some other information. Next, the applicant holds a community outreach meeting.

Outrage over trash plan prompts town to reevaluate

Madison Czopek Feb 3, 2021 Facing an onslaught of calls, backlash online and several members of the public who voiced frustrations at the Feb. 2 Board of Selectmen’s Meeting, the town will reevaluate its new trash plan to see if the cost can be reduced for some individuals. In the coming days, Town Administrator Derek Sullivan will look at ways the trash plan can be reconfigured to allow some groups namely seniors, seasonal residents or those with other means of trash disposal to receive discounts or special arrangements.  Sullivan explained that during negotiations with the curbside hauler, the town will save $125,000 in the first year, and the Selectmen asked him to propose different approaches for what to do with the savings.
