It used to be the hands of a watch that registered first and foremost when you took a glance, a quick reading of the time providing all the input one needed.
The challenge for brands was coming up with a clear dial layout, early competitiveness centring on accuracy and performance, whereas cosmetic innovations – such as cases in exotic finishes and materials – arrived on the scene more recently.
