Little Women Greta Gerwig followed up her stunning directorial debut,
Lady Bird, with this kinetic, colourful and wonderfully alive adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel. Saoirse Ronan is splendid as the protagonist Jo March, while Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern and Timothee Chalamet all do astounding supporting work. Gerwig’s secret weapon is the way she scrambles the plot; rather than separating their childhoods and adulthoods into two chapters chronologically, as it plays out in the novel, she intersperses each timeline with flashbacks and flash-forwards, creating a powerful sense of nostalgia for the childhood scenes and a beautifully emotional sense of coming of age in the adult scenes.
