The Mangaung Shutdown protest has officially been called off after the Premier of the Free State Sefora Ntombela and the provincial Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) met with protest leaders in an emergency meeting on Tuesday afternoon, 17 May.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said, on Wednesday, that 70 people have been arrested since the protests broke out on Sunday and they expect more to follow.

Premier of the Free State, Sisi Ntombela, wished all the nurses a happy International Nurses Day.
She acknowledged the pivotal role played by nurses in keeping people of the province and country safe, especially during the devastating times caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In her Facebook page (Sefora Ntombela), the premier hailed nurses for their continuous dedication and hard work, even though they have to work under trying conditions, especially after the outbreak of the coronavirus.
âI would like to take this moment to wish all our nurses well on this special day, which is International Nurses Day, and to also thank them for their continued loyal service to their country. Being a nurse is a calling and it takes a special type of individual, with compassion and deep love for the people, to do this type of work,â said the premier.
