accept a vice president or not. most likely megyn: let me stand you by. i want to go live to president obama in michigan. let s take a listen. he is saying his hellos. this is what he does, folks. he does a meet and greet when he goes before a crowd and makes nice with the crowd, which is what all elected officials do. the news on egypt should come momentarily. the white house confirmed that he is supposed to address the situation. let s continue to monitor the president, as interesting as the thank yous are, let me know when he gets to egypt. this is the situation as we know it in cairo. the egyptain president has said that he will step down and that there will be a transition of power to the army of egypt.
megyn: thank you, james rosen. please bring us updates as you have them. we ll be back to james as the newsbreaks. we re not only waiting to hear from the state department where james is they postponed what was supposed to be a 1:15 briefing but from president obama, who is expected at the microphones in a short time. from president hosni mubarak, we re told he is still in cairo. we re told he will speak live. we had heard that his comments were taped. the latest news, as we now know it, is that he will speak live and we expect it to be the announcement of his immediate resignation and transfer of power to the army. for how long, with the that means? we don t know. just so you know, the transfer of power will be outside of the constitutional framework.
that is being debate by government, the army and also the people down here. president mubarak said it will take place in september. he said would move it to june. we were heading yesterday it could be october 14. they want this to happen as soon as possible, but it has to be a peaceful transition. until we know who is in power we don t know how that transition will take place. we know once the announcement is made by hosni mubarak. that s what the 100,000 people in the square behind me tonight are waiting for. megyn: what about this report that we are hearing the egyptian information minister is denying the reports that mubarak will step down? who is the information minister? is this a person in a position to know? why would he be saying that s not the case if it is? reporter: the information ministry has been closely allied to the top of the government here to mubarak.
that civil society to be built. some folks said sit could take 10-15 years. i m sure that s not what the people in the square are thinking about. but we have to worry about a vacuum that might allow some groups to come in. i m sure the muslim brotherhood is looking for somebody to represent them that looks secular, that looks moderate that they can put into power that will allow them to come into power. we want an egypt that s pro-west with economic opportunity and at peace with its neighbors. this is a mantra we would like to see out of egypt. it s not clear that s going to happen. my sense is listening to everything being said the last hour, i m not sure the demonstrators will get exactly what they want. the army has been warning them once there is a supposed transfer of power we are expect you to go home, we are expect you to go away. is it going to be the stream
counter-terrorism over the years, has helped with the situation with israel and the palestinians over the years. i ve been to egypt with president bush to a place where there s some talk that mubarak may good after stepping down from power. president obama has been to the middle east to see hosni mubarak. he s been an ally to the u.s. over the years. everybody says that our allies around the world are watching how closely and how we treat this guy who has been a friend for 30 years. megyn? megyn: the president headed to michigan. he was supposed to discuss technology issues, including the effort to expand wireless networks. it s hard to believe that he will escape michigan without commenting in some way on cairo. and yet the white house may wait until we hear from president mubarak any moment now before president obama
