Poet Marylyn Tan is breaking down all sorts of barriers in Singapore’s literary scene. The first woman to win the Singapore Literature Prize for English poetry in its 28 year history, she is known for her iconoclastic, witty, outspoken take on subjects including gender politics, and consistently shows a willingness to take on taboo subjects, many of them sexual and religious. A former stand-up comic, she is also the founder of arts collective Dis/Content.

Netflix has picked up international rights to “The Yin Yang Master” a film that is one of the big seven tentpole titles that will open in mainland Chinese cinemas on Friday and compete for Lunar New Year holiday audiences.
Netflix acquired distribution rights in the rest of the world ex-mainland China from Huayi Brothers Media (“The Eight Hundred”).

The fantasy movie is a game-to-film adaptation of “Onmyoji” directed by Li Weiran (“Love Will Tear Us Apart,” “Welcome to Shamatown”) and starring Chen Kun (“Mojin: The Lost Legend”) and Zhou Xun (“Cloud Atlas,” “Painted Skin”).
New crowdfunding campaign launched for Taiwan history films

Taipei, Jan. 20 (CNA) Acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Wei Te-sheng (魏德聖) launched a second crowdfunding campaign Wednesday to raise money for his planned film series on the early history of Taiwan, with some of the donors allowed to tour the film sets and take home props.
On the campaign website, donors are invited to contribute either NT$240,000 (US$8,374) or NT$360,000, and will in return get movie tickets, as well as outfits or weapons used in the filming of the series, Wei said at a press conference announcing the launch.
