it s been a long, messy trial. it s gone on far, far longer than anybody thought it was going to take because of the number of defendants, the number of issues that have come up. and yet, at the end of the day, this was a verdict that the department of justice really was hoping for all along. the seditious conspiracy charge is not a charge that has a well-worn path in the government s prosecution quiver here, and hence a lot of legal, technical issues came up, but i think the really important thing here is that this is this is a rejection by a jury of peers, this is a rejection of ordinary citizens of the sort of implicit and sometimes explicit defense that these folks were acting at the behest of donald trump at the the sitting president, that they were actually trying to defend the united states. this is a rejection of that claim and, in fact, it is an acknowledgment that the actual
may be able to move forward on. in this trial did they have direct communications where enrique tarrio, the proud boys, are directing people what to do on the capitol that day? it was not necessarily enrique tarrio, but it was a group of them collectively understanding what was going to be done and disseminating information through their communication channels. written understanding or a nonverbal understanding of this is what we re out there to do, this is our goal there. that s part of what the difficulty was in terms of establishing the seditious conspiracy charge. if we re talking about donald trump and we re tiptoeing toward a seditious experience charge against donald trump, that s a big deal to say that, and i don t want to set up expectations, i have no idea what jack smith is considering right now, but if you re looking at what happened with enrique tarrio, do you think it s fair to even suggest that donald trump could maybe face something like that? i think it s f
pazzola, we re waiting to see what the jury found there. but those four defendants were found gl of seditious conspiracy. this is a big win for the justice department. despite some of our trepidations that were happening just before this, some of these other counts i guess are what the jury is held up on. i guess that s not going to be one for the history books. the top line will be here. at least four of these defendants were found guilty of that top charge, which was the big shot for the doj here, so i m sure there are a lot of smiles happening at that prosecution table right now. and the fact that enrique tarrio is one of the four found guilty on the seditious conspiracy charge, it s surprising to many, but what s your reaction here? if you re the government, you ve crossed the finish line, you can sit back because even as
what i find really interesting is the jury has not yet resolved the seditious conspiracy charge against him. that actually shows that the jury is very diligent and very attentive. as ryan said, he was kind of a johnny come lately to the conspiracy party. he joined very late. he didn t necessarily do everything the other co-conspirators did that made it clear they were members of a conspiracy. boy, i have to give this jury credit for being really thoughtful in the way they re going about returning these verdicts. the former chief of homeland security and intelligence for the district of columbia, you have been critical of law enforcement not communicating adequately, having had plenty of warning, if they had been talking to each other and looking at what we were seeing online, in the public space.
it is very, very difficult for the justice department to even get to the point where they want to bring that charge. it was a charge that first was born out of civil war and then in recent years until the january 6 insurrection, it essentially was very, very difficult to gain any convictions on. and so since then, the justice department has used all of the video, garland talked about thousands and thousands of hours of video, all the photos, text messages, other messages that they gathered between these members of the groups to be able to say these aren t just people that arrived at the capitol on january 6 and were violent there, were swept up in the crowd, but there were people who were in the leadership positions in both the oath keep ertz and proud boys who were collectively wanting to use politics to spur violence in this country.
