BRUSSELS – The European Union says that Russia’s intention to close some areas of the Black Sea for navigation causes serious concern and is a violation of international law, this is how EU Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano commented on the current situation in Brussels.
“The intention by the Russian Federation to close certain areas of the Black Sea for navigation until October 2021 under the pretext of military exercises is highly worrying, and even more so against the backdrop of the situation at the Ukraine-Russia state border and in the illegally annexed Crimea. This decision violates the freedom of navigation as guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The European Union expects Russia to ensure unhindered and free passage to and from the Sea of Azov in accordance with international law. The EU recalls its unwavering support to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and independence o
The European Union believes that the deteriorating situation in eastern Ukraine due to the movement of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border will not escalate into a conflict and call on the Russian authorities to fulfill the Minsk agreements.

The European Union is assessing the consequences of the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine to impose sanctions on the 112, NewsOne and ZIK TV television channels. We are aware that on February 2, 2020 the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has decided to impose sanctions against Taras Kozak, the owner of three TV channels (112, NewsOne and ZIK TV). We are assessing the implications of this decision. According to the Ukrainian authorities, this decision has been made on the basis of the anti-terrorist legislation and investigations finding that Mr. Kozak has received funds from non-government controlled areas controlled by separatists, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano told Interfax-Ukraine.
