possibly preparing to intervene in hong kong. that s where we begin tonight, protesters hitting the government right where it hurts, and the wallet. and the government hitting back with some force. the comment coming after protesters shifting strategy from blocking neighborhoods and streets to paralyzing one of the world s busiest airports, a key component in hong kong s lucrative tourism and travel industries. greg palkot has a late breaking details tonight good evening. it is just after 6:00 a.m. wednesday in hong kong and the airport has been quiet for a couple of hours as it tries to get ready to open up again. it was very noisy earlier tuesday. protesters and police clashing at hong kong s international airport, the local media called unprecedented chaos breaking out at one of the world s busiest transport hubs. for the second day in a row pro-democracy activists staged a sit in blocking chickens and security areas, getting in the way of passengers and stopping over 100 flights
everybody, including china. i hope it works out peacefully. hope nobody gets hurt. i hope nobody gets killed. dana: senior foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot has more. reporter: we have been tracking this for several hours now. it is 2 a.m. in hong kong as we speak. the international airport seems to be calm. the protesters have left. security has left. it was anything but that earlier in the day. second day in a row protesters stage a sit in, virtually shutting down one of the world s busiest airports, blocking check-in, security areas. after some 200 flights were blocked yesterday, over 100 were affected today. but the real trouble broke out when angry protesters turned on at least one, maybe two people they thought were working with the chinese. that triggered the riot police. they came in fully armed, banging into the crowd, and the crowd fought back. several people were injured on either side. some activists were taken away.
talks will continue in a couple weeks. one of the biggest problems the president has with china right now, he reiterated again today that they re not making good on their promise to buy more goods from american farmers. neil? grady, thanks very much. speaking of the chamber of commerce, their ceo will be joining us shortly. and now what s going on in hong kong. that was putting some pressure on stocks earlier when it erupted two days in a row of violence at the nation s premier airport. one of the busiest on the planet. greg palkot has more. how are things now? at this very moment, 4:00 a.m. wednesday in hong kong, things are calm. the protesters and security left the airport. anything but that earlier on tuesday. the second day in a row protesters basically shut the airport down blocking check in and security areas. monday, 20 flights were affected. here on tuesday, at least 100 flights more. then the real trouble broke out.

diplomacy, i think is much more willing to be harsher in the private settings, at least with these authoritarian leaders, then he is in the public ones. what do people want? i think people wanted the president not to necessarily equate the opinions of his own director of national intelligence, dan coats, with those of vladimir putin. that was i think the major mistake. bret: the moral equivalence. exactly. that sense of moral equivalence only reads president putin to think he has more of a free hand when it comes to intruding and meddling in our elections. i think president trump has been very effective in reestablishing deterrence in a lot of security areas. a lot of our enemies or competitors, but when it comes to cyber intrusions and election meddling where i think he may have led a blind spot with his remarks yesterday. bret: i said a couple of weeks ago that occasionally i would do this, to hear from the late, great dr. charles krauthammer on different issues. here s one.
