Virginia students take on solar energy challenge

Growing threats to the environment — from warming temperatures to melting icecaps, rising seas to more intense storms and floods — have increased calls to grow a green workforce that can figure out how to face a brave new normal. To that end, educators and innovators in Virginia devised a 10-week high school competition that enlisted bright young minds to propose innovations in solar energy. Solar panels generate energy from the roof of the Arlington (VA) Central Library. (Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services) The Throwing Solar Shade contest invited students from one urban and one rural school district to look to their own communities for inspiration. Three schools participated and produced about 15 student projects. The four winning entries studied the effectiveness of different solar panel surfaces, the use of light-hued paint to reduce asphalt temperatures, the physics of solar panels and the merits of placing solar panels atop commercial poultry houses.

At General Assembly s halftime, consumers hold a narrow lead

761 views Virginia is, famously, a state that prides itself on being business-friendly. That makes it all the more interesting that a number of bills favoring consumers have made it through the House. Democrats have led the charge, but several of the bills earned bipartisan support even in the face of utility opposition.  This doesn’t guarantee their luck will hold. Democrats aren’t just more numerous in the House, they are also younger and more independent-minded than the old guard Democrats in control of the Senate. The second half of the session is going to be a lot more challenging for pro-consumer legislation.

Only one application form was presented in the meeting papers, that of Dr Jessica Mercer.
