Plans by the ANC to amend the constitution to make it easier to seize land without paying for it have gone awry, because it failed to pin down sufficient support from other parties to push the changes through.
While the radical EFF, the third-largest party, backs expropriation, it says proposals flighted by the ANC don’t go far enough. The main opposition DA and other smaller parties oppose any constitutional changes, which require the backing of two-thirds of lawmakers a majority the ruling party lacks.

JOHANNESBURG - The ad hoc committee set up to amend Section 25 of the Constitution to allow for land expropriation without compensation wants an extra 30 days to finish its work.
The committee s deadline to come up with a report on the amendment to be submitted to Parliament lapsed on Monday.
MPs have now decided to ask the National Assembly for an extension.

CAPE TOWN - Political parties have still not agreed on amendments to the Constitution to explicitly allow for land expropriation without compensation.
This following bilateral discussions between individual parties.
The ad hoc committee to initiate and introduce legislation amending Section 25 of the Constitution last week resolved to amend the entire section and not just certain sub-sections.
