The first business at the National Education Union (NEU) conference, 3-6 April, was to announce that an online consultation, with a recommendation to reject, had 98% rejecting the government's offer, with a 66% turn out. Before conference NEU members who are teachers in English schools were already due to strike on 27 April and 2 May. At conference, it was agreed that the union will use the period of GCSE and A level exams from 15 May to begin a re-ballot of those members, to run until the end of July. It also agreed to timetable a three-day strike in late June or early July.

A head teacher has blamed a lack of clarity over key worker rules for a jump in the number of pupils attending.
Parklands Primary School in Leeds had 12 pupils in school during the first lockdown, but this time has 78.
Chris Dyson said the Department for Education s (DfE) widened critical worker criteria was encouraging parents to take the easier option .
It said all critical worker children should have access to a place if needed.

(Alliance News) - UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he has no doubt that schools are safe and parents should send primary-age children back to classrooms this week where schools remain open.
Johnson said he understood people s concerns about children returning for the new term but said education is a priority .
Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One, the prime minister said: Schools are safe. It is very, very important to stress that. The risk to kids, to young people is really very, very small indeed.
