meeting after meeting. cabinet potential official after cabinet potential official but it was all about trying to get a sense of who will fill out the top positions in the trump administration. the president elect greeting every single one of his visitors but on sunday there was a key focus on two individuals. chris christie and rudy guilliani. one of the most early endorsements of the campaign has been removed as the head of his transition team and his top allies have gone as well leaving people to question whether chris christie will have a job in the trump administration. all signs are pointing to no. not so much to rudy guliani. very close confidant throughout the campaign. he has been angling for a secretary of state job. we asked him if that s what he s looking at the mayor for. take a listen.
wants the secretary of state job. he s been pretty loyal to donald trump, so he s probably the good money on who will get it. and i know you ve been talking to many sources that are in the know on the transition process. can you give us a sense on how seriously he s taking some of these prospects such as democrat tulsi gabbard, such as mitt romney, some of these people who you may not have expected initially for donald trump to consider? well, i think there s certainly concern even among some people going into these meetings that this could just be a head fake and donald trump s transition team has made it clear, yes, some of these meetings are just for information-gathering, to learn more about how other people view the world and how you build a government. but i was told by a source this morning that tulsi gabbard is a person they re actually considering for defense secretary, for secretary of state, for a possible u.n. ambassador. now, the question is always, do you get past tha
that statement given the history between the two men? reporter: a lot of the people who are meeting the president-elect right now, especially someone like romney, it s like the bull has gotten into the china shop and they re trying to save one little piece or the other. romney feels if he can talk to trump enough, maybe he can either make trump more states n statesmanlike, which is doubtful, or he can find a position in the administration or influence a position in the administration where at least the secretary of state job would go to someone capable of being diplomatic. christopher, let me ask you what mitt romney brings to a meeting like this. you re talking about trying to preserve some strand of the republican establishment s thinking on foreign policy, perhaps on an issue like russia or dealing with somebody like russian president vladimir putin. i think the question that is central to this is, given the
top geopolitical concern for the united states when he was running. do you think they could actually work together? i do. and i think what happens with consensus builders and good negotiators, and successful businessmen who know you have to take the counsel of many different people, rivals, allies, is they find a way to work together if it s appropriate, anderson. look, i think in politics people look at each other through these blue and red lenses. but businessmen like romney and trump, they tend to be able to shed that those gladiator outfits of blue and red and try to solve problems and come together. i think it will be a productive conversation. i m smiling thinking about how maybe that is how hillary clinton viewed the secretary of state job after she had terrible things to say about barack obama, after they were primary rivals in 2012. not quite as tough, though. that s what happens. well, but barack obama senator obama at the time said hillary clinton will say anything
