the very near term. they need to prove their ability to maneuver an open cream and they need an enduring capability to deter and defend against russian aggression over the long term. secretary of state, secretary of the military behind me are they have been deeply, deeply involved in this effort. capability as general austin will tell you has been critical. that s why the united states has committed hundreds of armored fighting vehicles to date including more than 500 as part of the assistance package we announced last friday, and today, today i m announcing that united states be sending 31 abram tanks to the ukraine. the equivalent of one ukrainian battalion, secretary austen has recommended the step because it will enhance ukraine s capacity to defend its territory and
which i probably can t repeat on air. it is almost mafia like. it is like putting a horse s head in someone s bed. it is a threat to other countries. they have done it now, by my count, to at least four different embassies. it is beyond weird. you can t say it is russia who is doing it, but all indications matches some of the motive operations they have been using to try and intimidate people to not support ukraine. the ukrainian authorities have been asking patriot missile systems, other systems for months now, what other factors do you think the united states have taken into account before sending this like those? well, you know, anderson, everyone wants to give ukraine what they are asking for. secretary austen has been talking to the minister of defense, and they have attempted to try and fill all of their needs. patriots, though, i ve got to tell you, i keep hearing this, it is a special kind of system. what i mean by that, it is something the u.s. military calls, a high deman
which means, a lot of people want them in different theaters, but there is not a whole lot of them. there is barely enough of them to cover all of the requirements that the u.s. military has here they are extremely expensive. they have not just the missile, but the larger, radar, and command-and-control center, which are all a part of the package. it takes a year plus to train missile crew with even more time to spend training those who prepare them. this is not a rifle or even a high mars, where you teach someone how to point and shoot. this is a very complicated system. by the way, each one of the missiles that are fire costs between 3 and $5 million a piece, the missiles, not the launch. these are all things that add up . i think secretary austen has been replacing that demand for patriots with some of our older systems, we still work very well, like the hawk missiles, and others. i think we are trying our best to give ukraine what they need
