More turn to thrifting during pandemic
By Ron Rocky Coloma
While national retail sales show that consumers bought less apparel during the pandemic, secondhand sales indicate many turned to thrifting.
A recent report commissioned by the secondhand marketplace ThredUP and the research firm GlobalData estimates the secondhand market will double in the next five years, reaching $77 billion.
Monica Aslian, a recent Tiyan High School graduate from Barrigada, is one of the 33 million consumers the report indicated bought secondhand clothing for the first time in 2020.
“I learned about it through social media and my peers. The first time I thrift shopped was with my friend down south in Agat,” Aslian said. “When I have the time, I do come here at Second Chances Thrift Shop often.”
