the storm compares, we re joined by craig fugate of the obama administration and michael mann, a distinguished professor at penn state university and author of the the new climate war. thank you for joining me. craig, after katrina, the federal government spent more than $14 billion on levees, pumps, seawalls, flood gates, and drainage which provided enhanced protection from storming in the new orleans area. it s early days, early hours of the night, but does that work appear to be making a big difference tonight? yeah, but the storms are also different. so i think it did its job. we also built a lot of structures elevated and hard, even outside of the levee protection zone. and so far, those buildings seem to be doing better. as you re watching, a lot of older homes, building codes not as strong, they re losing their roofs. we re going to have a lot of
it will be a weaker system by then. it turns into a regular storm by the time it gets to the mid-atlantic, but we have to deal with a big rainfall event. we re through wednesday in the northeast. the same areas that got hit a week ago from today by hurricane henri, so the rainfall totals, heaviest in mississippi, along the border of alabama, tennessee, watch out around nashville and you had a ton of flooding over the last couple months, and all of this mess goes to the northeast. this area of red in here, alicia, this is five inches of rain possible, even around the new york area. it s like, yes, all the destruction, the wind and the storm surge is happening now. not a lot of people with power left in the new orleans area. the seawalls, the levees did hold, everything we have heard, that was obviously after katrina, a huge concern. spent $14 billion to $15 billion. it looks like that worked. so that s good. but the wind is doing some extreme damage. you can t stop the wind. so you can
in the hours and days after the tragedy in south florida. experts, pundits and you guessed it, gadflies, all rushing about the possibility that climate change may have had an impact on the building collapse. if you know washington, you know it means politicizing the problem and never letting a crisis go to waste. obviously we don t know fully but we do know that the seas are rising. we are losing inches and inches of beaches, not just in florida but all around. granted she was just responding to a question but in her answer, energy secretary jennifer granholm seemed to imply that climate change could have been because of the tragic building collapse in florida. we will have to wait to see with the analysis is but the issue about resiliency and making sure we adapt to this changing climate, that s going to mean levees need to be built. seawalls need to be built. and for structure needs to be built.
