SEATTLE - Since July a homeless encampment has been growing behind Broadview-Thomson K-8 School in Seattle’s Bitter Lake community. Neighbors and parents continue to call on Seattle Public School to put children’s safety first and to remove the encampment. Over the past 10 months the homeless encampment behind the school has been grown into more than 40 tents. Neighbors and parents have repeatedly called on Seattle Public Schools for a solution.

Parents like Evans are worried about safety and say their children, some as young as 5, are too scared to go in. Others are playing near the edge of the encampment, stepping on condom wrappers, broken bottles, and trash. I knew it had gotten bad, but I didn t realize how out of control it was, Evans told KIRO7. In emails obtained by the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH, Seattle School Board President Chandra Hampson and Director Zachary DeWolf stopped tried to stop Mayor Jenny Durkan’s office from sweeping encampments near Meany Middle School on Capitol Hill, and at Broadview Thomson K-8 in Bitter Lake. Hampson demanded sweeps “never” occur in the city, including on school grounds. DeWolf empathically emailed the city, “this is not an ask for a sweep!”
