A couple that was attacked while they were walking last week in Chinatown-International District said Wednesday that they believe they were intentionally targeted by a man who left both of them with serious injuries during an attack they said was unprovoked. I truly believe he was trying to kill us, said Michael Poffenbarger, who is white and was walking with his Japanese-American girlfriend, Noriko, when the attack occurred. He hit her so hard (and) he hit me really really hard. I was amazed at how hard he hit my head and it didn’t knock me out, said Poffenbarger. I thought for sure, I had a skull fracture.
