and also joining us rick seaney, ceo of farecompare.com. rick, i can remember years ago you get on a plane frequently plenty of empty seats. you are lucky you could stretch out, get three coach seats together. every plane i get on is full, every seat taken. what changed? well, there s a huge seat change. before, prior to the great recession, sort of the precursor of the fuel crisis that occurred right before the great recession, you had a group of executives for two decades that basically had a grow or die strategy. part of that was steal market share, add more routes and basically you had aircraft that had a third empty seats on them until this time. now it is the fuel crisis, the recession hits, you have a whole crop of new executives that come
we have to keep our aircraft 90% full which is effectively completely full. that s a huge seat change. now the economy is better and fuel prices are low, they do not want to go back to that old era of adding a bunch of seats. they don t have to anymore. there s plenty of demand out there right now and there s no sense for them to add capacity to their system if they don t need tochlt right now they are having record profits. professor ryerson, where s the line here? here are the airlines doing what as a business they should be doing trying to figure out how to fill as many seats as possible, which is to say how to figure out how to fly as few empty seats as possible. that is many managing the supply on their aircraft. the government saying somewhere in that process they are doing something that is in effect a violation of antitrust, possibly secondary violation that then creates an opportunity for them
liberties in the world and a country which provides so much to its people. i want to get jim mcgreevey s take on yesterday s landmark supreme court decision. governor thank you so much for being here. good to be with you, michael. how might a decision like this have impacted your life had it have come decades ago? oh, it s a staggering decision. basically the nation is saying that i am created equal in the eyes of the law and the eyes of society. it s a major seat change, michael. what it says to young lgbt youth all across this country that you re equal in the eyes of the law and for many of us in the eyes of the church. and it s a powerful decision. the notion of equality. the notion of dignity. it s a word justice kennedy used again and again. your story is so well known and in your case you were actually married and then of course came the revelations. you announced to the country, as
we just saw in the tape. i am a gay american. do you think it would have put you on a different path? a personal path that would have been different had the supreme court decades ago given this green light? sure. i mean i think that if that decision had been there as a young boy, i would never have made the decisions i did. frankly, i would have talked to my mother and father and asked them. i would have talked to a teacher and i would have talked to a person and authority. a local parish priest and frankly you looked all around and the government didn t recognize homosexualty. in fact it was labeled by the american medical association as an illness. there was no recognition of gay marriage. there was no support. there was no recognition by the state, the authority of the state. so when the united states supreme court, the highest law of the land recognizes gay marriage as being worthy of the recognition of the supreme court, it s a seat change not
fair share. i do not see this huge seed change in election but i saw seeds. there is populism in canada and our country as well. in your intro, absolutely right. secretary clinton should take note. we don t want keystone xl and leaders that are actually going to put their values on the line and start talking in ways that we talk around kitchen tables or talk to each other on this tv program. and so it s a huge seat change. i think president obama clearly is going to take note. alber tans wanted to see a change in tar sans and so do americans. do you think president obama was in the back of his head and not say anything play out in canada, what do you think, jane? i do but i think time is up for the president to make a decision on keystone. he made keystone xl a climate issue last june when he gave the georgetown speech. it s long past due to reject keystone xl and move on to bigger issues on climate change and so we hope a decision is going to come sooner rather than
