what more is he saying about recovery efforts from the united states? well, secretary blinken had a tour of that affected province over the weekend. one of the hardest hit provinces out of 11 affected provinces here in southeast turkey. he met with the search and rescue teams. he flew in from the united states as well as u.s. aid personnel. he recognized and acknowledged this would be a long process. he was clear in his messaging that the biden administration would stand behind turkey for as long as it takes, not only through the search and rescue process, not only through the humanitarian response effort, but also through the rebuilding process. the u.s. government thus far has pledged about $185 million in support with turkey and syria. that further $100 million being announced by secretary blinken during his visit. this is going to be a long process for turkey, and the need for international support is only growing.
he s been covering the story since the early morning hours of the collapse. sam, we know more fires in the rubble slowed down the search and rescue process, but i know officials insist this is still search and rescue. what can you tell us about how realistic it is that they re going to find more survivors? reporter: well, they re maintaining hope. i guess that s the best we can tell you, chuck. look, we re entering the fourth day of this search. over my shoulder on the other side is a pile of rubble that s three or four stories high, and that rubble is incredibly fragile. we know search and rescue crews have much better accessibility than they had 24 hours earlier. the fire was emanating from the building. they had to locate it with infrared technology. they were deploying water and foam to tamp down the flames. all that smoke and we re several blocks away was so

many showed up to do these rescues and speaks to the spirit of the people around you, these are really good people, listen to one of them talk about that. here it is about saving lives. we are from ground 0 but we get these people out of houses for the next couple days anyway, we get home and rebuild. reporter: that guy we went out with from rockport where the storm s i his, they came back after having damage to their house to save lives. we have 3000 rescued in the houston area. 3000 lives and more, that is the number of rescues and 1000 of them in a eight our span yesterday, ramping up, the governor talking about how this started. just beginning the process of responding to the storm. we are still involved in the search and rescue process.
