Dr. Richard Samuel Piazza, 63, pleaded guilty to three charges of unlawfully writing prescriptions for controlled substances such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, two of the drugs behind the nation’s opioid crisis. U.S. District Judge Janet Neff on Tuesday, Jan. 12, sentenced Piazza to nearly six years in prison, to be followed by three years on supervised release.

Henry “Hank” Johnson, D-Georgia, over gun legislation. Martin Dale Osborn of Bangor also left threatening messages for two other federal officials, a federal prosecutor said. Osborn pleaded guilty as charged to threatening a federal official. U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney sentenced Osborn to one year, one day in federal prison. He said those who make sure threats “must understand the likelihood that they’re going to serve some time in incarceration is significant.”

(CN) Five of the six men accused of scheming to kidnap Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer pleaded not guilty before a federal judge Thursday after a grand jury found the night before there was enough evidence to indict them. The indictment returned late Wednesday did not add additional charges against the men but a chilling detail emerged: one defendant, Brandon Caserta, allegedly sent a message to the others saying they should give law enforcement one chance to retreat from any confrontation and then kill the officers if they refused.
