Working in the mushroom capital of the world, Kennett Square, PA-based Phillips Mushroom Farms continues the legacy started by William Phillips, who first started farming mushrooms in the area in 1927.
Since that time, the company has grown to where it now sells more than 57 million mushrooms per year.
Phillips Mushroom Farms offers a wide array of mushrooms from conventional whites to organic portabella, and specialty mushrooms like Maitake, Lion’s Mane and Shiitake.
The Kennett Square, PA-based company, which has been growing mushrooms since 1927, also features customized retail packs, bulk sale assortments, foodservice packs and private label packages. As the company enters July, it’s seen some positive trends for 2022.
Doing business in what’s known as The Mushroom Capital of the World, Kennett Square, PA-based Phillips Mushroom Farms is one of the largest growers of specialty mushrooms in the area.
“Phillips Mushroom Farms has been growing mushrooms in Kennett Square since 1927,” said Sean Steller, director of business development for the company. “Initially, mushrooms were distributed at markets and not transported very far due to perishability and lack of refrigeration. The industry has come a long way in just the last few decades.”
The last two years have been like no other time, and one thing Sean Steller of Phillips Mushroom Farms is looking forward to in 2022 is attending his first trade show since 2020. He will be representing the company at the Southeast Produce Council’s Southern Exposure expo.
On March 31, Kevin Donovan is retiring from Phillips Mushroom Farms after spending the past 35 years as the sole salesman involved in selling the company’s entire production each day.
