people need to be careful out here. reporter: she heard the shot? circumstances she heard the shot. the moment she said she stepped off the bus, she heard the shot. reporter: they heard the round from an off-duty police officer s gun. according to police, the 33- year-old five-year veteran of the force was getting off his shift and in plainclothes when he was approached by three men, one armed, and tried to rob him. the officer fired his service weapon, hitting one suspect in the arm. one of the suspects was a teen at the scene by the officer. the suspect who was struck fled and we caught up with him at an area hospital and got him there. reporter: police continue searching for the third, a scene that looked chaotic to neighbors. to me, everything like a major shoot-out out here. reporter: not major, but definitely brazen. the suspects may not have known their target was an officer, but they attempted their robbery just two blocks away from the southern district

here s what people are talking about. two people shot in cold blood. mike hellgren has the latest on their conditions. reporter: officer jerome sharratt went through another surgery this morning. the other officer has been released. police say sean sinclair fired directly into the patrol car of officer jerome sharratt. officer sharratt responded after a fell he low officer called for backup. sinclair has an extensive arrest record. he s also faced allegations of domestic violence. eyewitnesses say the gun battle in west baltimore was frightening. it is really a shootout. we never experienced this. it was like something out of law and order, a movie, walk up to the police driver and just let loose. reporter: police say the violent incident began when sinclair assaulted two women. one of them may have filed this protective order against sinclair. to assault the women is cowardes is. to be running around the streets of baltimore, he established himself as a menace, a
