And for many people, she’ll be the first vice president who looks like them. When Riya Amin was growing up, she said she was the only Indian girl in her elementary school. Her parents emigrated from India and moved to Cleveland before she was born.  It was hard to understand at that age why she didn’t look like other girls, or why she was the only vegetarian. At the time, she said there wasn’t as much cultural understanding.  “It was pretty difficult for me growing up,” said Amin, 26, who now lives in Northfield. “It’s made me a little stronger now.”

Dog gone for eight years reunited with Barberton family in time for Christmas

A dog that spent eight years apart from his family was reunited with his owner just in time for Christmas. After years of searching and holding out hope, Julia Nemeth said it s the best gift she could have received.  It s like that moment you dream about, she said. You dream about it for eight years, and it hasn t set in yet that it s reality. Junior, a 9-year-old pit bull-terrier mix, returned home Thursday after spending most of his life lost from his family. He became Nemeth s dog in 2012 after another pet she rescued, Junior s mother Page, had 10 puppies. She found homes for the other nine, but kept Junior and trained him to be a protector and companion.

Winter storm warning: 6-9 inches forecast in Summit, Portage, Stark

Akron Beacon Journal Forecasters are calling for and more and more Christmas snow and have placed the region under a winter storm warning. The National Weather Service in Cleveland is predicting heavy snow after dark Thursday evening. Six to nine inches of snow is expected over the course of Christmas Eve and Friday. The winter storm warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Friday, after the National Weather Service upgraded the region form a winter weather advisory.  The warning is for Summit, Portage, Stark, Trumbull and Mahoning counties. Heavy snow is expected to hit Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania.  The forecast is calling for rain to begin Thursday afternoon before it transitions into snow. Only an inch of snow is expected to accumulate during the day.

Cleveland Clinic Akron General nurse battling COVID-19 heads home from hospital Kate Thompson, an intensive-care unit nurse, found out she had contracted COVID-19 on Nov. 3. She s amassed a following as she shares details about her fight with the virus.  She s continued to urge everyone to take COVID-19 seriously, while showing people what the virus has done to her. On Thursday, Thompson, a Claymont High graduate who worked at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, posted on Facebook that she was finally home. [It] was almost like the black and white to Technicolor scene in Wizard of OZ, she wrote. I was gray and dismal...the second I walked in the house, my color regained, my smile a lil brighter, the attitude a little more happier, and somehow EVEN more grateful.
