As cities and towns around New Jersey continue to roll out ordinances that would prevent cannabis business from opening within their borders, some are taking the cautious route: banning everything until they see how it works in other cities and towns and thinking they might revisit down the road.
Under the marijuana legalization law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy, cities and towns have the power to control both medical and legal weed businesses in their towns. They can also levy fines on those who use cannabis in public, and some Jersey Shore towns have already taken those steps. But they cannot stop people from using cannabis on private property or having it delivered to them.
