Bruce Dern will be 85 in June but rather than slow down, he is popping up more frequently than ever. In writer Greg Lingo’s semi-autobiographical film, Dern plays one of the colourful characters in an Irish working-class neighbourhood of Philadelphia.
Described as a “slice-of-life comedy”, the story is a familiar one of a character struggling to come to terms with roots they have worked hard to forget. There are some laughs, but even more stereotypes.
Real estate agent Seamus (Jeremy Piven) returns to his family’s bar for his mother’s wake. His father (Jack McGee) is bankrupt but proud, his brother (Zach McGowan) is a charming rogue so far so begorrah. There is the girl Seamus left behind (Taryn Manning) and a moral dilemma with a real estate deal that could make or break the old neighbourhood.
