Lamu Port curves niche in transshipment business
Kenya could be a major player in transhipment business with the new Lamu Port, as it starts to attract business two months after commissioning by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The President officially launched the country’s second major sea port, after the Port of Mombasa, on May 20.
During the time, the facility received tow vessels MV CAP Carmel from Singapore and Mv Seago Bremerhavel.The two ships were on transit from Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam ports, respectively.
Last Thursday however marked a key milestone for the port which is being fronted as a transshipment hub in the region.

Comarco Tag boat towing barge carrying two Rubber Tyred Gantley cranes under Kenya Revenue Authority mobile scanner spotted at the Likoni Ferry Channel on Monday, 17 May 2021, while leaving the port of Mombasa to the port of Lamu. Lamu Port starts operations with the arrival of two vessels - Mv Cap Carmel and Mv Seago Bremerhavel.
Both ships will arrive from Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam ports and dock at the new harbour today (Thursday).
