Seagate Mach 2 Specs Revealed | 14TB Capacity, 12GB/s, and More

Seagate HDD: Mach.2 Specs Revealed Seagate reportedly reveals more about why they used dual actuator drives. It was noted that hard drives became faster for three reasons, command queuing, increased spindle speeds, and integration of drive cache. Short stroking the drive can also increase the speed since it only stores data on the outer edges of the platter, improving transfer rates and reducing time. Seagate is reportedly marketing the drive as a solution to short stroking. The spindle reportedly speeds up at an excess of 15,000 RPM might not be practical since vibrations created by multiple drives all running at that speed could cause potential harm when enclosed.

Seagate may have just unveiled the world s fastest HDD

(Image credit: Seagate) Seagate has finally disclosed the official specs of its first dual-actuator hard disk drive (HDD) the Mach.2 Exos 2X14 and listed it on its website. Although SSDs have now become the standard for business laptops and workstations, HDDs still have a place in data centers due to their ability to store large amounts of data relatively cheaply. However, Seagate s Mach.2 multi-actuator technology aims to speed up the rate at which HDDs can transfer data without sacrificing their storage capacity. While traditional HDDs have one actuator with read/write heads, the company s Mach.2 drives have two in order to double both their sequential and random read/write speeds. Seagate has been working closely with Microsoft since the end of 2017 to develop its multi-actuator technology and based on the Mach.2 Exos 2X14 s specs, its efforts have paid off.

Seagate reveals world s fastest HDD – the Mach 2 Exos 2X14

SSDs are known to significantly outclass HDDs in terms of performance, but Seagate has been developing a new technology that should reduce the difference. Named Mach.2, this new technology features a dual-actuator and two HDDs working simultaneously to deliver a level of performance similar to a SATA SSD, making it the fastest HDD in the world. The first HDD to feature this technology is the 14TB Seagate Mach.2 Exos 2X14, which features 2x 7TB HDDs in a 3.5-inch casing filled with helium. This 7200RPM HDD features a multi-segmented 256MB cache and uses a single-port SAS 12Gb/s interface to reach a maximum transfer rate of 524MB/s. With an average latency of 4.16 ms, the Mach.2 Exos 2X14 is capable of executing up to 304/384 random read/write IOPS.

Seagate s Roadmap: The Path to 120 TB Hard Drives

Seagate recently published its long-term technology roadmap revealing plans to produce ~50 TB hard drives by 2026 and 120+ TB HDDs after 2030. In the coming years, Seagate is set to leverage usage of heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), adopt bit patterned media (BPM) in the long term, and to expand usage of multi-actuator technology (MAT) for high-capacity drives. This is all within the 3.5-inch form factor. We can use our recent experience, productizing our 20 TB HAMR drive to translate from laboratory demonstrations to products, which puts us on track to deliver 50 terabytes by 2026, said John Morris, Chief Technology Officer of Seagate. We have drive technologies planned which will enable long term HAMR growth
