"In the first two years following the Santa Cruz Harbor construction, about 600,000 cubic yards of sand accumulated against the west jetty, significantly widening Seabright Beach," writes columnist Gary Griggs. "Wave action soon moved sand around the end of the jetty and deposited it in the entrance channel. Dredging began in 1965 and has been an annual process ever since."

"This amount of sand would fill about 1 million standard dump trucks, or a line 3,400 miles long, which would extend from San Francisco to Houston and back again."
