The Matanzas Pirates’ flag football team headed to the Ormond Beach Soccer Complex Wednesday, April 21, and played the Seabreeze Sandcrabs in the District 5-1A Championship Tournament. After struggling to establish leverage, the Pirates fell to the Crabs, losing 30-0.
Matanzas finished up the regular season 2-10. Head coach Thomas Wooleyhan attributes the outcome to the inexperience of his team. His current roster lists four seniors, five sophomores and the remaining 13 are juniors, some of whom have never played the sport.
“Next season, we are only losing four seniors,” Wooleyhan stated. “This season has been tough because 12 of our seniors graduated last year. It will be better.”
