Slightly more than 59,000 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy so far this year by crossing the Mediterreanean, according to Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese. About 79,000 people are currently being hosted in the national reception system.
Two boats have capsized off Tunisia, leaving at least 39 people dead. The shipwrecks happened amid an ongoing rise of the number of migrants risking the Mediterranean crossing to Europe.

More than 5,300 migrants and refugees have arrived on Italy s coasts irregularly so far in 2021. That s more than twice the number of people who arrived during the same period in 2020. Meanwhile, the number of migrants intercepted and returned to Libya reportedly also increased.
The Italian interior ministry released new data on migrant sea arrivals on Tuesday. According to the ministry, 5,306 migrants and refugees landed on Italy s coasts between January 1 and March 2 of this year. During the same period in 2020, only 2,553 migrants and refugees arrived on Italian shores.
A majority of arrivals thus far this year (3,896) were registered in February, including 398 minors.

A man is believed to have frozen to death trying to reach the Greek island of Lesbos on Monday. 27 others, mostly from Somalia, landed on the island and were rescued after spending a night in the open.
The Greek coastguard said Wednesday, January 20 it had recovered the body of a man and rescued 27 other people who had made the journey to Lesbos in icy weather from Turkey.
The migrants, mostly Somalis, landed late Monday on a rocky section of the coast on the eastern side of Lesbos, where they spent the night. A Greek coastguard official said that it was not clear what had happened to their boat.
