Community Content Two new books and an accompanying CD that pay tribute to Salem’s musical history recently became available. The books are “Old Salem at Sea in Ballad and Song” by Robert Strom, with foreword by Daisy Nell, and “Old Salem in Ballad and Song” by Robert Strom, with foreword by Jim McAllister. In “Old Salem at Sea in Ballad and Song,” there are over 90 ballads and sea songs that entertained sailors in their long hours at sea and sea shanties, sung to “lighten the workload and as a relief from the tedium of hard hauling or pulling the lines and adjusting the sails required to keep the ship working.”
