california, higher elevations could be up to 18 inches by the end of the week. maybe 24 inches possible. the ski resorts, 70 to 85 inches on the ground across this region. i want to show you what s happening on the other side of the world. speaking of snow, we have a big storm developing across portions of turkey. this is in istanbul. flights cancelled. people oftentimes are surprised to think about this region, because take a look at the perspective on this. when you bring in turkey, i want to show you areas of the mediterranean and the middle east. we have turkey right above that, and the black sea. people often surprised to see the amount of snow in this region. across the black sea, pretty warm water. you have cold air coming over this. what we call sea effect snow. you see this in the united states as lake effect snow. the energy transfer from the
significant amount of snow for japan lately. and just for our domestic viewer, i m going to try to relate this to you guys. are you familiar with what happened in buffalo, new york, about two or three weeks ago, they measured the snowfall in feet? that s exactly what s happening in northern japan at the moment. what we re getting is cold sigh liberian air rushing across the sea of japan. it s called is sea effect snow. there s a big temperature differential between the ocean and the land. and there s a lot of mountains across this area as well. it s just helping give this lift. and that s this area to create. impressive snowfall totals which we ll get to in just a moment. it could be a lot of fun for the kids, but it can also be a lot of nuisances for us adults. take a look at this visual coming out of that area. people having to snowplow and drive through just centimeters of snow. upwards of 97 centimeters in
snowmen. and it s all thanks to, well, we ll relate it to what we get in the united states, an arctic blast of air but it s a siberian blast of cold air and temperatures at the moment across the korean peninsula running ten degrees lower than they should be and will continue for pyongyang and seoul, korea, into the next three days so very, very cold air and creating an effect that was similar to the weather pattern that occurred in buffalo, new york, about two to three weeks ago. that was lake-effect snow. this is called sea-effect snow. same principle. basically getting that cold blast of siberian air in this particular case, riding over relatively warm water. this is the japanese sea or the sea of japan and what it s doing is it s encounter land and
some of that moisture from the sea of japan and creating snow. and also creating the sea-effect snow. we re getting that lift to create some impressive snowfall totals. it s a beautiful sight for the children to have some fun. but unfortunately for the adults, they have to navigate the roadways and get owl the shovels. we re measuring snow upwards of a meter of total since wednesday. this is the 14th snowiest day on record for some locations. just shy of a meter. and at the moment, we have 11 out of 47 prefectures out of the blizzard warning. it s not only the heavy snowfall, but we also factor in the stock winds.
