Rotary Club of Edmonds awards scholarships to 10 Edmonds-Woodway, Meadowdale HS seniors Posted: May 24, 2021 334 Rotary Club of Edmonds has given $12,500 in scholarships to 10 local high school seniors. Since 1976, Edmonds Rotary has awarded 311 scholarships, totaling $305,205 for secondary, undergraduate, and graduate study in a wide range of academic fields. Students from Scriber Lake, Edmonds Woodway, and Meadowdale high schools are encouraged to participate. Awardees are selected based on transcripts, financial need, community service, academic and career goals, and personal triumphs in the face of obstacles. “What amazes me is how each student showed remarkable character and commitment to their school and their community, despite the restrictions and challenges of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Richard Okimoto, chairman of the Edmonds Rotary Youth Services Committee. “Their accomplishments, as evidenced by awarding of Edmonds Rotary Schol

Eight Edmonds School District teachers receive National Board Certification

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: January 22, 2021 The Edmonds School District announced that eight teachers recently received their National Board Certification. This brings the total number of National Board Certified teachers in the district to 224. The teachers are: Emily Turner, VOICE Transition Meaghan Veysey, Scriber Lake High National Board Certification involves an extensive series of performance-based assessments that include teaching portfolios, student work samples, videos and analysis of classroom teaching and student learning. Teachers also complete a series of written exercises that probe the depth of their subject-matter knowledge, as well as their understanding of how to teach those subjects to their students. The entire process can take up to 400 hours.

(Source: the newspaper collection at Sno-Isle Genealocal Society, Heritage Park, Lynnwood) Recently, a reader commenting on my April 9, 2019 article, “Looking Back: South Snohomish County place names from the past,” asked how Shell Creek got its name? In my reply to the reader’s question, I reached back to some of my own memories from well over 80 years ago, when I was a child of Edmonds before development of the land covered over portions of the creeks by piping their flow of water underground. Of course, since Edmonds is a waterfront town with its creeks flowing into Puget Sound, it does seem logical to assume that the naming of Shell Creek is related to sea shells. However, I don’t recall the waterfront beach or the creeks of Edmonds having any noticeable or unusual shells, and question that the Shell Creek name came from that source.
