Breakers coach Dan Shamir had no doubts that his star import Lamar Patterson would break out of his early Australian NBL funk and deliver a signature performance. As they say, form is temporary, and class permanent. That it happened in game three, a much-needed 85-79 victory over the Cairns Taipans in far North Queensland on Saturday night, was still a relief for the Breakers mentor as he got his team off the schneid for the season, with a chance to claw back to .500 against the same side on Monday night. The Breakers’ first victory of their stop-start campaign – there had been 10 days between their second straight defeat to the Adelaide 36ers and this one, a health scare and an aborted trip to Perth – improves them to 1-2. The Taipans, though, remain on the slippery slide with a sixth straight loss leaving last year’s surprise semifinalists teetering on the brink at 1-6.
The opening round of the NBL season is in the books, and it sure feels like we ve already seen it all.
The top talent has been shining, a double-overtime thriller had the NBL world on the edge of its seat, some imports are looking questionable, Next Stars are taking centre stage . and that s all basically come from just one game.
Despite how early it is in the season, we ve seen enough glimpses to make a few educated assessments of what we liked and didn t like from the first round of action, all under the obvious preface of understanding the tiny sample size.

The NBL 2021 season is finally upon us, after months of delays due to the ongoing COVID situation that is not only affecting our country, but also the world. I’m sure we are all excited to watch some basketball, but it’s time to get to the serious stuff!
There has been so much movement from players and teams this season, but the NBL needs to be commended with the retention of import players into the NBL, even though the import spots were changed from three per team to two. This shows that the NBL, Australia and New Zealand are seen as safe places to work and a legitimate pathway to the NBA.
