After a South Florida Sun Sentinel investigation in May revealed that most elevators failed to have a current certificate of operation, an assurance they have passed a yearly safety inspection, the district has largely fixed the problem. Less than 2% of the district’s elevators are now out of compliance.
Investigation: The South Florida Sun Sentinel found that about two-thirds of Broward school district elevators 162 out of 236 failed to have a 2022 certificate of occupancy, as of April 30. This means either they haven’t been inspected in more than a year or their last inspection resulted in violations that have yet to be fixed.
Broward Schools Superintendent Vickie Cartwright says she will propose a policy change to establish new rules for workers with second jobs. The move could affect numerous employees.
