Lawyers for APD officer involved in deadly shooting ask police not to release bodycam footage

Police are expected to release footage of the Jan. 5 incident on Wednesday. Author: Jeff Bell, Luis de Leon Published: 6:53 PM CDT April 27, 2021 Updated: 10:10 AM CDT April 28, 2021 AUSTIN, Texas The lawyer for an officer involved in a deadly shooting in southeast Austin on Jan. 5 is asking the Austin Police Department and Travis County district attorney to not release body camera footage of the incident as planned on Wednesday. Alex Gonzales, 27, was shot and killed in the incident in the 2500 block of Wickersham Lane. Police said Gonzales cut off an off-duty police officer driving his personal vehicle. Police said the officer, identified as Gabriel Gutierrez, saw Gonzales pull out a gun and shots were fired. Gutierrez then called 911 to report the incident.

Alex Gonzales Police Shooting Body Camera Heartbreaking and Tragic , Family s Attorney Says After Release On 4/28/21 at 2:22 PM EDT The mother of Alex Gonzales, who was fatally shot by Austin, Texas, police officers on January 5, canceled a press conference because she was overcome with emotion after she viewed newly released police video of her son s killing. I think when you see the video, it s going to be heartbreaking and tragic, the attorney for Gonzales parents, Scott Hendler, told KXAN on Tuesday. What happened is unconscionable, in my opinion. There s no credible defense for it. Austin Police Department (APD) released the footage to the public on Wednesday of what body and dashboard cameras recorded in the officer-involved shooting. The footage comes 113 days since the incident, which APD said is because severe winter storms in mid-February delayed the video release.

Manley departs with mix of praise, criticism from Austin civic leaders

Manley departs with mix of praise, criticism from Austin civic leaders The reaction from political and civic leaders Friday to the news that Brian Manley is stepping down as the chief of the Austin Police Department was much like Manley s tenure itself: a mixture of positives and not-so-positives. While some took the moment to celebrate Manley s career accomplishments – an impressive rise through the department from patrol officer to chief – others said his departure was overdue and that Manley s presence had slowed efforts to improve the culture of policing in the city and the department s relationships with communities of color. Manley s last day on the job is scheduled to be March 28, a Sunday. The official word for his leaving is retirement, and the announcement came just days after the Austin native celebrated his 30th anniversary in the department. But Manley made clear during a Friday news conference that he will continue to work after leaving the department and

Attorneys for foreign banana workers waited too long to make move, Delaware Supreme Court rules

Plaintiffs lawyer Scott Hendler DOVER, Del. (Legal Newsline) – Banana plantation workers who tried to sue in Delaware – despite working in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama – have again been told they cannot do so. The Delaware Supreme Court on Jan. 12 rejected their appeal to a 2013 dismissal of their complaint, finding a motion to vacate that dismissal filed five years after it was too late. “Not surprisingly, the Superior Court cited the two reasons for the delay offered by the plaintiffs – the burden of the many other DBCP cases counsel was handling and the time and research required to prepare the motion – and found them to be unpersuasive,” says the opinion, authored by Justice James Vaughn.
