Directed by Britain’s best loved TV Judge, Craig Revel Horwood, Strictly Ballroom: The Musical follows arrogant, rebellious young ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings (Kevin Clifton). When his radical and daring dance style sees him fall out of favour with Australian Federation, he must dance with beginner, Fran (Faye Brookes). Together they find the courage to defy tradition and discover that to win, your steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom!
It may have a former Strictly star’s name in lights, and choreography by a Strictly judge, plus the show’s resident choreographer, but this isn’t a Strictly show. Had it been, I’d have given it a solid seven, while leaving my ten paddle just out of reach. Second thoughts, make that an eight .
Ultimately, Strictly Ballroom works. It’s a musical that makes sense, looks stunning and gives the audience a warm feeling in their heart as they leave the theatre.
