Clean Energy Advocates Say Industry Will Slow If Lawmakers Fail To Increase Renewable Energy Goals

Pennsylvania’s renewable energy goals are set to plateau at the end of the month. Advocates say that will slow down the clean energy industry, costing the state jobs and investments that could help in the post-pandemic recovery. Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act of 2004 set a series of targets for electricity generated by a range of sources, from solar to waste coal. Utilities are slated to meet the final goal of buying 8 percent of their electricity from renewable sources, with half a percent coming from solar, by May 31. The legislature could increase the goals, and by doing so, spur investment in renewables.

Luxe Home Interiors moves to a new downtown address

Photograph By Supplied “It feels perfect being downtown. The vibe is so exciting,” says Scott Elias, co-owner of Victoria’s luxury home décor retailer Luxe Home Interiors. “On the first of May, we moved our business to 564 Yates Street (between Government and Wharf) from our long-time home of 22 years, on the corner of Douglas and Hillside.” The new change of space was necessary as their lease was expiring at the Scott Building due to redevelopment plans. Luxe has found a new home in a 160-year-old heritage building that has been the site of a silent movie theatre, a supply store for miners enroute to the Klondike, and the offices of the local women’s temperance union.

Scott Building redevelopment at Douglas and Hillside set for takeoff

Andrew Rennison of Primex Investments said in total the project will deliver 151 new rental homes; 17,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space will remain in the heritage building. Rennison said the project will start with structural and seismic upgrades to the building, which was built in 1912. “If all goes well, we expect to be welcoming residents sometime in 2023,” he said. A development permit was issued by Victoria city council last August, and the proposal has the blessing of the Burnside Gorge Community Association, which said the redevelopment fits with local area plans for a large urban village and amenities at the Douglas-Hillside corner.
