Supporting recovery of Adelaide Hills wildlife
The yellow-footed antechinus is a small mouse-like native animal which is classified as vulnerable in South Australia. Most species nest communally in tree-hollows.
Wildlife ecologist Dr Jasmin Packer from the University of Adelaide’s School of Biological Sciences, has lent her voice to the long-haul recovery of the habitat devastated by the recent Adelaide Hills bushfire, which is home to endangered species and wildlife.
“The Adelaide Hills bushfire left a devastating 2700-hectare hole in wildlife habitat,” Dr Packer said.
“The bushfire primarily ravaged across the Mt. Bold Reservoir Reserve and Scott Creek Conservation Park – a biodiversity hotspot that is home to many native wildlife.
The CFS has provided the following update in relation to the bushfire at Cherry Gardens.

ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS
Despite today’s slightly elevated weather we saw a consistent level of flare ups occurring across the fireground and all were quickly extinguished by ground crews with support from the air. In total 41,000 litres of water from 41 loads was strategically dropped from the helicopter bucketing system, which is a slight decrease from yesterday.
Continued operations to assess for hot spots and extinguish areas of smouldering trees, logs and stumps were undertaken by ground crews working on the perimeter of the fire.

You are now in danger. Take shelter in a solid building. Do not leave or enter this area in a vehicle or on foot. It is too late to leave as the roads will not be safe.
Conditions are dangerous and firefighters are now unable to prevent the fire spreading. Shelter before the fire arrives as heat can kill you well before the flames reach you.
