We are watching and learning from Malawi - David Hope-Jones

We are watching and learning from Malawi - David Hope-Jones David Hope-Jones We decided just over a year ago to make 2020 our ‘Year of Governance Strengthening’ in the Scotland Malawi Partnership. It seemed like a good idea: with over 300,000 Malawians and Scots working together each year, there was no shortage of goodwill, expertise and energy to draw on to strengthen governance in both our nations. © David Hope-Jones OBE, Chief Executive, Scotland Malawi Partnership We were clear from the outset that this was a two-way partnership: investing as much time in working together to strengthen governance in Scotland as Malawi and ensuring we were always driven by a sense of mutual respect and mutual understanding.

Photo: ACTIONAID UK/AMOS GUMULIRA THE UK Government is being urged to end a colonial-era tax treaty with Malawi which campaigners say is depriving the one of the world’s poorest countries of vital resources. Under an agreement dating back to 1955, it is possible for UK companies operating in the south-east African country to pay little or no tax. Now the Scotland Malawi Partnership is working with charity ActionAid to call for the UK Government to renegotiate the “outdated and unfair” treaty, which campaigners say is a barrier to raising vital funds to invest in the country’s infrastructure.
