THE SNP have slammed Boris Johnson’s “desperate” blueprint to save the Union, saying voters will see the Conservative government have nothing positive to offer Scotland. Keith Brown, the party’s depute leader, hit out just two days ahead of polling day on Thursday after it emerged at the weekend Johnson’s government – hit by a series of sleaze allegations – was drawing up plans to spend billions of pounds on the country’s transport network in a bid to stop independence. Brown said: “Whilst the SNP is focused on taking Scotland safely through the pandemic and into our recovery, the Tory government are desperately scrambling to deny the people of Scotland their democratic right.

He made the remark in an interview with the American magazine the New Yorker, published yesterday, which profiled the First Minister ahead of the Holyrood election on Thursday. The two politicians were once close friends but bitterly fell out in the aftermath of sexual harassment complaints made against the former First Minister by two civil servants which led to him successfully taking Sturgeon s government to court.

The First Minister described her feelings over the feud with her predecessor in an interview with the leading current affairs and cultural magazine in the United States, the New Yorker. The past year has accentuated Sturgeon’s leadership qualities, the feature by the periodical s London-based journalist Sam Knight reported. But it has also been politically traumatic. In 2018, Salmond, her predecessor and mentor, was accused of sexually harassing staff while he was in office. An investigation by Sturgeon’s government into the allegations was mishandled, and a subsequent criminal prosecution, in which Salmond was tried for attempted rape, ended in his acquittal.
