the national climatic data center is the nation s scorekeeper of severe weather events, it s still tallying from hurricane irene and says it is certain the storm will rank as the tenth billion dollar weather event of just this year. the president will travel to new jersey on sunday to inspect the damage. this will give republican governor chris christie a special opportunity to build his credentials within the republican party by telling the president he don t need no damn help from the federal government, or by at least embracing the eric cantor principle that whatever disaster help new jersey gets from the federal government should come from cuts in other federal funding that goes to new jersey. much of the damage in new jersey, now, is from flooding. many towns are still under water. nbc s ann thompson is there.
i think the view that the ryan plan actually reduces costs is a reflects a deep misunderstanding of the plan. in fact, it would reduce budget costs to the federal government. but what the problem is for the united states in the case of health care is that all of our health care costs are going up. and the ryan plan, according to the estimates of the congressional budget office, which substantially raise the total cost of services for people covered by medicare. it is important to point out that the cbo is like a calculator. what you put in, you get out. there is an arbiter, they are a nonpartisan group. they do straight analysis. doug was the head of the organization and much admired during his tenure of the congressional budget office. you can argue that one way or the other. but basically, the cbo is our scorekeeper. and the calculations they come up with is that it raises costs,
