BACOLOD CITY: More than P4.5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were confiscated in two houses by personnel of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in San Juan Tunga, Barangay 5 in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Thursday. Maj. Ryan Villasario, deputy chief of San Carlos City Police Station, said that 252 cases of smuggled cigarettes worth P4,536,000 were confiscated by personnel of the BIR, with the assistance of the police. Villasario said there were no arrests made as the BIR personnel only served a memorandum order, citing the owner for his violation. The confiscated cigarettes had no BIR sticker, which indicated that they were smuggled into San Carlos City. The origin of the contraband has not yet been determined by authorities as of press time.
