Great question. I wanted to write a book that would be a first draft of the history of the long epidemics for the year of covid and beyond but that would speak to an interested reader, not just a specialist in the field. There are lots of specialists in the field and i thought my valueadded might be to translate from specialists in the field to reader who are fascinate by the blizzard of legal issues that werent really on most peoples anda until now. We never thought about pt epidemics but think about them now, particularly what we can learn from them andhat do we know when its going to be over. I want to begin, john, if i can, really at the end of your book, and then ill pivot book at the end of our interview to ask you more but this question. You write, america has two histories, one ugly,he other far more appealing. In the months and years ahead, americans will hold the power between them. Lets hope the make the right choice. Im going to be asking you more but what that right choice

Weve heard in the previous sessions today about Fact Checking political news, a Law Enforcement is preparing for potential post election violence. Weve also discussed the impact of disinformation about covid19 and communities of color. Our next panel will focus on covid19 political mobilization and digital platforms. Weve seen the power of information and disinformation in the era of coronavirus but how can people cut through the sea of claims and counter claims on the internet and social media and make sense of the sheer volume of information out there . And what is the responsibility of those who oversee social media platforms to make sure that information out there is actually correct and accurate . So today we have a distinguished group joining us. Im going to start with you, first, david. Dr. David is an associate professor in the school of engineering and applied sciences at the George Washington university. Hes the associate director of institute for data, democracy, and politic
The battle against covid19 . If you were asked for status reports what would you say . A mixed bag. If you look at the numbers, very serious and concerning. We have had 185,000 deaths, 6 million infections. If you look at the country, a large country, there are some areas doing really well right now particularly those early on, in the metropolitan area, at least a month been less than one test positivity. In other parts of the country, what we saw in the Southern States with a big surge when they try to open the economy that brought a baseline number of daily infections up from 20,000 a day to 70,000, we are back between 3040,000 and as though states are starting to level off and come down which is really good sign we are seeing the beginning of surges in places like montana, the dakotas, michigan, minnesota, iowa. It is a mixed bag. Some areas are doing really well and some are still threatening to have surges. It is not an easy situation. If someone say we are rounding the final curv
