Allison Carruth, professor of American studies and the High Meadows Environmental Institute, will present “‘The Science Is Clear’ Why the Climate Crisis Needs New Narratives” for the third talk in the spring 2022 HMEI Faculty Seminar Series.
Carruth will discuss how appeals to both big data and apocalyptic alarm define the most widely circulated environmental stories. While powerful for some groups, these appeals do not speak to the increasingly unequal impacts of global warming. Carruth will make a case for narratives that develop localized, lived accounts of climate change by drawing from examples that at once contribute on-the-ground knowledge and envision possible futures beyond catastrophe.
