Property rights violations lead to high compensation awards

The amount of damages Malta has to pay after the European Courts of Human Rights found that rights had been violated remains one of the highest in Europe, with the total awarded last year exceeding that awarded in France, Germany, Spain and the UK combined.
Figures published in a report on the ECHR’s work show that Malta had to pay €1.08 million in “just satisfaction” in 2019. The figure went up to €1.67 million last year.
