May 5 North Carolina health officials are no longer requiring face masks to be worn outdoors at schools but are strongly recommending them when social distancing can t be maintained.
Updated state Health and Human Services guidance released on Wednesday no longer talk about face coverings having to be worn when students, staff and visitors are outdoors at public and private schools. Instead, the new wording in the N.C. Strong Schools Toolkit lists several situations where it recommends, but doesn t require, that face coverings be worn outdoors.
And that concerns Dr. Christopher Ohl, an infectious disease doctor at Wake Forest Baptist Health.
âProm is going to be a challenge and, just frankly, not a very good idea,â Ohl said earlier this week. âIt epitomizes all the things we tell people not to do.â
He revisited that sentiment during his weekly news conference on Thursday. Proms, by their nature, are typically fraught with behaviors that come with risk during a pandemic â slow dancing, eating, mingling. That doesnât even include two staples of a typical prom night â eating in a restaurant with a large group of friends and hanging out with friends into the wee hours.
