State schools Deputy Superintendent Heidi Armstrong said she could not give an estimate for how many of the public schools’ 3,001 Lahainaluna-Âcomplex students died in the Aug. 8 wildfire disaster in West Maui.
The number of displaced West Maui public school students who still have not enrolled in new schools or been contacted by state officials is 1,208, down from the 2,025 first reported late last month.
As of Wednesday, 1,757 West Maui students or 60% of the total enrollment have not transferred to public schools elsewhere or may have enrolled in private schools, moved out of state or are unaccounted for, according to DOE.
The DOE said it is coordinating bus transportation for West Maui students to get to and from the temporary school sites, and hubs for pick up and drop off of general education students are being determined.
